11:00PM - Book meme!!!

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 234.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next four to seven sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest [unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1].

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Seeing that her phone had been-- what would they call it, hacked?-- then she would simply have to go down to the street and find a police officer and make a formal complaint. Nothing happened when Maeve pressed the button for the lift, so she walked down the stairs, thinking that there was probably never a police officer about when you wanted one anyway, they were always zooming about in those cars, the ones that went neenorneenor."
I was reminiscing today about how I used to watch Shalom Sesame/Rechov Sumsum/Shalom Sumsum instead of Sesame Street as a child. I found this on YouTube and it made me SO happy. The English version is the second. ENJOY!
I Am A: Neutral Good Human Bard (3rd Level)
Ability Scores:
Strength-12
Dexterity-11
Constitution-12
Intelligence-14
Wisdom-11
Charisma-15
Alignment:
Neutral Good A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment because because it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable.
Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.
Class:
Bards often serve as negotiators, messengers, scouts, and spies. They love to accompany heroes (and villains) to witness heroic (or villainous) deeds firsthand, since a bard who can tell a story from personal experience earns renown among his fellows. A bard casts arcane spells without any advance preparation, much like a sorcerer. Bards also share some specialized skills with rogues, and their knowledge of item lore is nearly unmatched. A high Charisma score allows a bard to cast high-level spells.
4:01PM - ZOMG COMPS TOPIC!
Well here it is:
"The Torah is the most sacred book in the Jewish tradition. Very early on Jews began the process of interpretation of this central collection of books. What forms did interpretation take in antiquity and in the modern world? Name some stories that are central in the Jewish tradition. How does interpretation enhance and transform the original stories? You may either track one ancient story through time or you may treat three different examples."
So, I guess I should get to work...
3:32PM - Biblical Musings
I have been reading the Tanakh for recreation lately (for those who don't know, that's the Hebrew acronym for Torah- the five books of Moses, Nevi'im- Prophets, Ketuvim- writings). I have rediscovered several aspects of this book that I knew I liked but forgot about. The first is Psalm 137. If you have not read it, read it NOW. In my opinion Psalm 137 displays human nature in an amazingly profound manner. People are represented as the spiteful creatures that we are, while at the same time, the psalm itself is amazingly touching, or at least, powerful.
I have also fallen in love again with Song of Songs. It is an amazingly beautiful (and erotic- yes, the Bible has erotica!) love story. I was re-reading it, and I totally do not buy the theory about it being a love story between God and humanity, the Temple, insert other non-sexual thing here... It's about the joys of love and sex. Read it now.
Genesis and Exodus are the last books I will mention with which I am currently having a love affair. They are about VERY VERY flawed human beings who still manage to do great things. As simple as that sounds, I feel that message is very special. Most religious texts show their heroes as perfect or near to it. The imperfection and mundaneness of the heroes of the Hebrew Bible give me hope that anyone, even I, being the imperfect creature that I am, can have a profound affect on the world.
